Our Work

PSEC has been establised as a completely youth-led and youth-run organization by LGBTQ youth leaders from across Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Student Equality Coaliton became an incorperated organization in Pennsylvania on April 28th, 2011.

PSEC’s primary work begins through strong communication between our coalition members. As youth organizers, we work to empower ourselves through community engagement, leadership trainings, and activism for social justice.

PSEC coalition members work in nine regions throughout the Commonwealth. Each region is facilitated by a Regional Coordinator. Regular meetings are held with the regional LGBTQ youth leadership. While supporting events in schools and local communities, three collaborative events are held each semester between all the schools in that region.

PSEC organizes four annual statewide summits: Spring (Philadelphia), Summer (Harrisburg), Fall (Pittsburgh), and Winter (State College). At our summits we develop our upcoming campaigns and evaluate past programs.

PSEC also organizes broad-based statewide campaigns and events. Our organizers held over 35 vigils on our college campuses in October 2011 and 2012 as Pennsylvania Night to Live, in remembrance of youth who have completed suicide in relation to sexual orientation or gender identity. In April 2011 and 2012, our leaders held over 25 coordinated balloon releases to break the silence of the National Day of Silence. These events will continue with us as annual reminders of LGBTQ youth issues and our solidarity.

For the third year in a row, our leadership has been proud to partner with Equality Forum to bring over 100 LGBTQ youth leaders to Philadelphia for a weekend of educational programming and social events.

We have very exciting plans for summer 2012 as we continue to grow as the first youth-led statewide LGBTQ organization.
